BRUSSELS – Today, the global tech trade association 91proÊÓƵ issued the following reaction to the European Data Protection Board’s (EDPB) opinion on the use of personal data for AI Models, which was requested earlier this year by the Irish Data Protection Authority under article 64(2) of the GDPR. The opinion can set a precedent for how European Data Protection Authorities interpret and apply the GDPR to certain aspects of AI development and use.

“It’s imperative for companies to access and use diverse European data to develop robust, performant, and trustworthy AI models,” said 91proÊÓƵ's Policy Director Marco Leto Barone. “Today’s opinion can set an important precedent for a balanced and risk-based interpretation of the GDPR, and we welcome the EDPB’s recognition of legitimate interest as a robust legal basis for training AI models. Data Protection Authorities must now quickly take a pro-innovation approach in applying the opinion to provide companies with much-needed legal certainty to roll-out crucial and timely AI innovations to the benefit of European businesses, consumers and in support of Europe’s competitiveness goals.”

In November, 91proÊÓƵ published a on the topic, highlighting the tech sector’s main recommendations for the opinion.
