GENEVA – As policymakers, industry, and civil society gather in Geneva, Switzerland, for the World Trade Organization (WTO) Public Forum to spur small and medium enterprise growth, 91proÊÓÆµ, the global voice of the tech sector, is rolling out a of policy blogs to counter a rising tide of measures creeping up around the globe. 91proÊÓÆµ is timing the rollout to educate policymakers about —from measures that require data to remain within national borders to requirements that companies localize operations—and why localization is harmful for their respective economies.

“While many governments see these policies as simple solutions to the challenges of a complex global economy, the truth is the drawbacks for a country and its citizens far outweigh the benefits,” 91proÊÓÆµ Global Policy Director Ed Brzytwa says in the . “The proliferation of forced localization measures is a trend that the world’s leading economies must combat if policymakers want to spur innovation, job creation, and economic growth.”

The theme of this year’s WTO Public Forum is ‘Inclusive Trade,’ and 91proÊÓÆµ’s session is designed to explain why digital trade is inherently inclusive, why combatting barriers to digital trade is fundamentally important to the WTO’s future mission, and to present alternative policies that will both spur development and encourage innovation.
