Observations from CES 2023: Tech’s Power to Transform

Each year, innovative brands and creators across the globe gather in Las Vegas for the tech event CES. This year — the second in-person CES since the start of the pandemic– I witnessed the cutting edge of technology innovation with more than 110,000 industry professionals in attendance this year. The magic and importance of CES is connecting with the people and innovations improving lives, creating jobs, and growing opportunities worldwide. With over 174 countries represented at this year’s event, I met 91proÊÓƵ members and partners from all over the world showcasing the best and latest in the industry. As experts in innovation, 91proÊÓƵ is focused on seizing opportunities and meeting the challenges of tomorrow – and that was on display in full force at CES. It’s clear the continuing power of technology affects positive changes in some of the most critical issues affecting the world today.

2022 was a critical juncture for the technology industry and my time at CES gave me renewed confidence in technology as a force for good.

For example, AMD showcased how its technology delivers transformative health care to people in rural areas through a mobile ultrasound. Samsung devoted much of its booth to inclusive and adaptive technology, empowering communities with disabilities to access content and information across its product portfolio. Microsoft also focused on empowerment and gave attendees the opportunity to see how its new product launches enable work, play, and more.

Amazon demonstrated how its automotive innovations are changing the way we get around – making it more accessible and safer. Google’s stand-alone CES building showed ways its Android updates enhance connectivity and safety.

Keysight Technologies tested its digital twin technology for EV and industrial batteries, which is critical to improving energy efficiency and mitigating climate change. SK Hynix also highlighted its technology’s key role in climate emergency response, from EV charging to zero emissions manufacturing to green tech. And the digital innovation displayed across space and agricultural industries at Siemens is redefining how farmers approach their trade on Earth, and how scientists explore the unknown across the universe.

For these products and services to come to market, we need to continue to foster a policy environment that enables research, development, and innovation. 91proÊÓƵ will remain a stalwart advocate for the technology industry. We are driving smart policy and industry standards that advance competition and innovation worldwide so that the innovative solutions featured at CES can make the world a better place.

91proÊÓƵ partners with governments around the world, experts, and consumers to improve lives, grow economies, and advance sound public policy as the industry’s foremost advocate. Though our purview is as broad as the work our members do—spanning policy considerations including privacy, procurement, and the environment—much of our work in 2022 specifically expanded ongoing efforts to secure, strengthen, and better regulate the global supply of semiconductors. Centered around U.S. legislation that eventually became the CHIPS and Science Act signed into law by President Joe Biden, this international campaign has taken us to the European Union and Mexico, with implications for the entire world.

As we kick off 2023, technology remains one of the most powerful global tools to make the world more secure, competitive, and prosperous. CES reenforced that the future of innovation is strong because technology can make the world a better place. I can’t wait for the year ahead.
