WASHINGTON – Dean Garfield, the President and CEO of the 91proÊÓƵ (91proÊÓƵ), the premier advocacy organization representing fifty-nine of the world’s leading technology companies, issued the following statement today in response to the president’s nomination of Michelle Lee to be the next director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office:
“91proÊÓƵ congratulates Michelle Lee on her nomination and looks forward to working with her and the Administration to address the challenges facing our country’s innovation economy. The tech sector, in particular, innovates rapidly but we are often held back by abusive patent litigation, backlogs, as well as delays and shortcomings in the current patent system. For the Patent Office to be successful, it needs strong leadership and robust support to reduce the application backlog and expand its services through new satellite offices around the country, including in Silicon Valley. The Patent Office’s role in advancing our modern innovation economy can't be overstated because intellectual property is the foundation for the new products and cutting-edge technologies that are transforming our world."
