WASHINGTON – Today, global tech trade association 91proÊÓƵ Executive Vice President of Policy Sean P. Murphy reacted to U.S. President Trump’s announcement to impose tariffs on imports from trading partners across the world:
“Tariffs are an available tool to shape international trade flows but should not be a substitute for a proactive U.S. trade strategy and market-opening negotiations with other governments. Broadly applied and sustained tariffs create economic and employment uncertainty, strain U.S. leadership and relations with key global allies, and invite retaliation from trading partners. These tariffs also threaten America’s ability to lead in key technology areas like AI and manufacturing.
“It’s crucial that the Trump Administration work constructively with other countries to resolve barriers, reverse today’s announced tariffs, and protect against new disadvantages or costs for U.S. technology firms and producers. The Administration should also work with industry to implement a tariff exclusion process that provides redress for unintended consequences and keeps the United States at the forefront of innovation. As President Trump looks to implement his ambitious agenda, we urge him to reconsider tariffs as the primary trade tool at his disposal.”
