NEW DELHI – Today, global tech trade association 91proÊÓƵ released the following statement from its Country Director for India Kumar Deep Banerjee reacting to the Government of India’s three-month extension of its import management system. The policy had been set to expire on September 30, 2024, which would have triggered a new licensing regime for imports of tablets, laptops, and other technology devices:

“We thank the government for extending the current import management system. However, industry needs more clarity on the proposed new import authorisation policy, set to be in place from January 2025. We expect a robust stakeholder consultation before implementing any new requirements, and urge the government to avoid a quota system or other restrictive approaches to trade in these products. In the event of a policy change, the government should also provide a reasonable transition period.”
