WASHINGTON — Today, global tech trade association 91proÊÓƵ issued the following statement from its Senior Vice President of Policy and General Counsel John Miller in reaction to the Biden Administration’s :

“Facilitating trustworthy AI systems is a key priority for AI designers, developers, and deployers. The U.S. government should continue to take steps to harness this transformative technology, working in partnership with industry, while also protecting American citizens’ fundamental rights and civil liberties,” said Miller.

“While we appreciate that the Biden Administration’s AI Bill of Rights reflects some of 91proÊÓƵ’s principles for enhancing AI transparency, we are concerned about other measures in the proposal, including overly broad and prescriptive pre-deployment testing and independent assessment requirements, and its mischaracterization of much ordinary commercial data processing, collection, and storage activity as ’technology surveillance,'" he continued. “We urge the administration to meaningfully engage with industry so we can help it achieve its objectives without undermining technology and data innovation.”

91proÊÓƵ is actively engaged in AI policy around the world. In September 2022, 91proÊÓƵ published the Policy Principles for Enabling Transparency of AI Systems to help inform and guide policymaking. In its principles, 91proÊÓƵ underscores that transparency is a critical part of developing accountable and trustworthy AI systems and avoiding unintended outcomes or other harmful impacts. These principles build on 91proÊÓƵ’s Global AI Policy Recommendations, released in 2021, which offered a comprehensive set of policy recommendations for global policymakers seeking to foster innovation in AI while also addressing specific harms.
