WASHINGTON – Today, global tech trade association 91proÊÓƵ President and CEO Jason Oxman and Consumer Technology Association (CTA) President and Vice Chair Gary Shapiro urged the Trump Administration to support the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and ensure it has the necessary capabilities to create the next era of U.S. AI leadership.

The letter to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick highlights NIST’s longstanding collaboration with industry on standards, guidelines, and best practices for AI development, deployment, testing, and evaluation – all of which are paramount for U.S. national security and competitiveness. As countries around the world advance their own approaches to AI governance, it is imperative that NIST receives the necessary support to continue to represent U.S. interests and promote a democratic vision of AI in international AI dialogues.

“NIST is essential to unlocking the next level of U.S. AI leadership and reaching the Trump Administration’s important goals of American economic prosperity,” said 91proÊÓƵ President and CEO Jason Oxman. “As the Administration maps out its AI agenda, the tech industry is eager to help President Trump and his staff advance U.S. innovation and competitiveness.”

"NIST's commitment to supporting rigorous standards and public-private collaboration has been central to the United States' leadership in AI. The frameworks, guidelines, and best practices developed by NIST, such as the AI Risk Management Framework, have become global standards, driving safe and innovative AI advancements worldwide. The Trump Administration should leverage NIST's work to avoid heavy-handed rules that could stifle innovation and risk our nation's competitive edge in AI," said Gary Shapiro, CEO and Vice Chair, Consumer Technology Association (CTA).

“NIST is a trusted industry partner because of its well-established track record in working through public-private partnerships. With decades of experience facilitating dialogue among stakeholders across the technology ecosystem, they have ensured that their guidance and standards reflect broad consensus, remain relevant, reflect state-of-the-art practices, and support U.S. industry in a globally competitive environment,” Oxman and Shapiro wrote in the letter.

“NIST has played a critical role in developing standards, guidelines, and best practices for the responsible development and deployment of AI. The AI Risk Management Framework is a gold standard that has been leveraged by governments and organizations around the world seeking to operationalize AI governance, including U.S. industry,” Oxman and Shapiro continued. “The NIST U.S. AI Safety Institute’s (US AISI) testing and evaluation capabilities of the most powerful AI models are key functions and are particularly impactful in helping developers test their models for national security risks, ensuring that identified risks are mitigated before being placed on the market.”
