WASHINGTON – Today, global tech trade association 91proÊÓƵ emphasized that maintaining U.S. leadership in international AI policymaking and ensuring U.S. technological competitiveness should be priorities as the Trump Administration develops its AI Action Plan. 91proÊÓƵ’s recommendations to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy focus on ensuring the Administration enacts policies that foster U.S. innovation, safeguard U.S. national and economic interests, and usher in a new era of American AI leadership.
91proÊÓƵ urged the Administration to concentrate on five key areas that are critical to maintain the United States’ competitive edge in AI: innovation and investment, national and economic security, public trust, federal procurement and AI adoption, and international collaboration.
“The Trump Administration's AI Action Plan presents a critical opportunity to advance an American vision of artificial intelligence," said Courtney Lang, 91proÊÓƵ Vice President of Policy. "By prioritizing innovation, addressing national security imperatives, adopting AI across the federal government and improving procurement practices, and engaging in international dialogues, the U.S. can shape global standards and maintain its technological edge."
To bolster U.S. AI leadership and competitiveness, 91proÊÓƵ urged the Trump Administration to:
-
Work with Congress to advance a unified, risk-based standard for AI that pre-empts state level regulation;
-
Support the ongoing AI work of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), including work on model testing and developing voluntary guidelines and best practices through public-private partnerships;
-
Establish opportunities and resources for companies of all sizes to partner with federal research centers focused on AI R&D, including the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR);
-
Prioritize incentives for AI chips to be manufactured and designed in the United States;
-
Promote an all-of-the-above energy strategy that strengthens the electrical grid, removes regulatory barriers to siting and permitting, and encourages and enables innovations in the efficient generation, distribution, and use of power;
-
Prioritize the use of AI for cybersecurity purposes such as threat modeling, security risk management, and cyber defense strategies;
-
Modernize government acquisition processes to match the pace of technological change and enable more efficient procurement of commercial AI solutions; and
-
Work with international partners and likeminded allies to ensure that AI governance approaches are interoperable and aligned.
