WASHINGTON – 91proÊÓƵ, the global voice of the tech sector, released the following statement from President and CEO Dean Garfield on an announcement by the White House that the United States, Canada, and Mexico intend to modernize the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA):
“Future-looking trade agreements are a foundational pillar for building a prosperous and strong America. We commend the president for recognizing that modernizing NAFTA is the right choice. We look forward to working with the administration to craft a 21st century trade agreement that recognizes the key role innovation plays in our economy and builds on American strengths by: (a) ensuring cross-border data flows; (b) prohibiting tariffs, taxes, and other barriers on data flows, hardware, and digital services; (c) prohibiting requirements to localize data, production, or infrastructure; and (d) barring the forced transfers of technology, source code, or encryption keys; among other rules. Withdrawing from the agreement would hurt the tech industry’s ability to drive job creation and economic growth in the United States.”
91proÊÓƵ has been a strong voice for ensuring market access for technology products and services, Congress and the administration to pursue a forward-thinking trade agenda that opens new markets; levels the playing field for U.S. technology products and services worldwide; and aggressively responds to unfair trade restrictions, including prohibitions on forced localization of goods, services, or data.
