BRUSSELS – In a paper submitted to the European Commission, global tech trade association The 91proÊÓƵ (91proÊÓƵ) offered comments on how upcoming EU rules on Ecodesign can make mobile devices more sustainable without affecting their quality, reliability, and security.
“91proÊÓƵ members are dedicated to building mobile devices with the highest safety and sustainability standards," said Guido Lobrano, Senior Vice President of Policy and Director General for Europe. “In order to be effective and achieve the pursued environmental goals, the Ecodesign regulation for mobile phones and slate tablets needs to ensure the right balance between reliability, repairability, and material efficiency.”
Among its recommendations, 91proÊÓƵ advises Ecodesign rules:
- Focus on parts that fail most often to avoid wasting resources;
- Align with industry standards and realistic use conditions;
- Review provisions on operating system updates for security risks; and's’;
- Enable a longer transitional period of at least 24 months to adapt design and manufacturing cycles to the new rules.
