WASHINGTON – Ahead of the EU-U.S. Summit on October 20 in Washington D.C., global tech trade association 91proÊÓƵ called on U.S. and EU leaders to advance transatlantic relations by promoting open and trade-enabling policies, reaffirming efforts through the U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC), and pursuing sustainability goals while supporting innovation.
“This week’s EU-U.S. Summit is an important opportunity to advance the $7 trillion transatlantic relationship and bolster the global economy,” said 91proÊÓƵ President and CEO Jason Oxman. “As U.S. and EU leaders address a challenging geopolitical and economic climate, strengthening the transatlantic relationship must remain a top priority. Both sides are stronger when they work together. 91proÊÓƵ urges U.S. President Joe Biden, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Council President Charles Michel to make progress on priority issues while preserving free and open competition, supporting the global competitiveness of their economies, and enhancing international leadership on digital trade, AI, and sustainability.”
Specifically, 91proÊÓƵ calls for transatlantic leaders to:
-
Reaffirm a transatlantic commitment to open and trade-enabling policies, including strict adherence to non-discriminatory treatment and good regulatory practices, in the implementation of initiatives pertaining to digital policy and emerging technologies;
-
Ensure that the TTC and other existing bilateral mechanisms are empowered to address trade concerns to prevent those concerns from disrupting broader transatlantic cooperation and/or inadvertently benefitting nonmarket economies;
-
Identify actions that can be undertaken by the TTC before the next ministerial meeting to ensure this dialogue is durable, focused on priority topics, and responsive to stakeholder input in 2024 and beyond; and
-
Commit to pursuing environmental and sustainability goals without creating unnecessary barriers to business or trade by ensuring consistency with existing and proposed policies and providing legal certainty and predictability by avoiding conflicting requirements.
Earlier this year, 91proÊÓƵ called on U.S. and EU leaders to further cooperation in key areas such as trade, cybersecurity, AI, and 6G, and reinforce commitments to leverage international standards and uphold non-discriminatory treatment, both of which are foundational to the further development, application, and adoption of key technologies.
