NEW DELHI – Today, global tech trade association 91proÊÓƵ released the following statement from its Trade Policy Director Kyle Johnson expressing concerns with the Government of India’s new import restrictions policy, which would require a new licensing regime for imports on tablets, laptops, and other technology devices:

“91proÊÓƵ and its members support India’s ambition to become a $1 trillion digital economy, of which manufacturing is a significant part. While we are pleased the Government of India has given industry additional time to implement its new licensing policy, we have significant concerns about the impact the policy will have on Indian citizens, businesses, and startups. This significant change must involve formal stakeholder consultation, as it will unnecessarily impede business if implemented without extensive revisions. 91proÊÓƵ calls on the Government of India to consult with all concerned stakeholders to revise this restrictive regime in a way that will advance India’s objectives, facilitate foreign investment, and comply with international trade obligations and norms.”
