WASHINGTON – Today, global tech trade association 91proÊÓƵ released the following statement from its President and CEO Jason Oxman reacting to the first-ever National Security Memorandum (NSM) on AI published by the Biden Administration. The NSM fulfills the directive of U.S. President Biden’s October 2023 Executive Order on AI and aims to bolster U.S. competitiveness, security, and innovation in the ongoing global AI race.
“We appreciate the Biden Administration’s continued efforts to advance the AI Executive Order. Today’s memo will ensure the U.S. can leverage the immense benefits of AI to meet national security objectives, advance international cooperation, and deploy innovative acquisition strategies to secure cutting-edge commercial AI technologies that ensure the U.S. remains the world’s leader in AI innovation.
“Importantly, the memorandum highlights the key role of the U.S. AI Safety Institute in conducting collaborative research and development to build trust in frontier AI systems. It also champions another public-private partnership at the National Science Foundation that 91proÊÓƵ has long advocated for—the National AI Research Resource—which boosts the AI research ecosystem. As implementation of the memorandum begins, we urge policymakers to leverage industry’s expertise and ensure collaboration with the tech sector remains a top priority.”
91proÊÓƵ also led a coalition of over 60 companies, universities, and non-profits calling on U.S. Senate and House leadership to enact legislation that authorizes the U.S. AI Safety Institute within the National Institutes of Standards and Technology (NIST) before the end of the 118th Congress. 91proÊÓƵ also recently released its , which provide in-depth suggestions on how policymakers can improve the cybersecurity of AI models and systems.
Today’s memo also recognizes the importance of making strategic investments in building the reliable, resilient, and clean infrastructure necessary for supporting AI’s development. 91proÊÓƵ's Sustainable Technology Policy Guide: Understanding AI’s Role in the Energy Transition outlines how global policymakers can support sustainable innovation, while leveraging AI's immense benefits.
