WASHINGTON – Today, global tech trade association 91proÊÓƵ issued the following statement from Naomi Wilson, 91proÊÓƵ’s Vice President of Policy for Asia, in reaction to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s speech outlining the Biden Administration’s approach toward China:
“91proÊÓƵ welcomes the Biden Administration’s renewed approach to the critical U.S.-China bilateral relationship. We commend its desire to leverage U.S. and multinational tech companies’ ability to innovate and benefit U.S. economic and national security, including efforts like enhancing U.S. domestic semiconductor manufacturing. To fully enable the United States to reap those benefits, the U.S. government must rescind Section 301 tariffs and ensure that other U.S. policies, such as export controls, do not inadvertently undermine the business community and U.S. government’s shared objectives. These policies have exacerbated ongoing supply chain challenges across all sectors, increased economic uncertainty for Americans, and no longer provide leverage in discussions with the Chinese government. To that end, we are disappointed that the administration continues to waver on the rollback of Section 301 tariffs and has yet to undertake serious negotiations to address the tech sector’s priority concerns, including government subsidization and market access restrictions.
“President Biden has underscored the importance of a comprehensive, strategic, and international, coalition-based approach to the U.S.-China bilateral relationship. While outlining this plan is an important step, it is critical that the administration take concrete action to build on it, rescind tariffs, and work with industry to enact a U.S.-China trade policy that benefits the U.S. economy, U.S. workers, and the supply chain.”
