BRUSSELS – Today, global tech trade association 91proÊÓƵ released the following statement from its Director General for Europe Guido Lobrano in reaction to the European Parliament Plenary vote on the EU AI Act:
“As a first mover and leader in AI governance, EU policymakers have the crucial responsibility to ensure the AI Act becomes a future-proof and innovation-enabling tool that increases trust in this key technology. To do so, the AI Act needs to remain a risk-based legal framework, only targeting riskier uses of the technology with feasible and proportionate requirements and providing a clear and agile pathway for businesses operating in the EU to bring their products to market.
“While the text voted from the European Parliament contains improvements, we remain concerned about the departure from the risk-based approach in the provisions on foundation models and the expanded list of high-risk AI uses. The upcoming trilogue negotiations will be fundamental to further address these elements.”
91proÊÓƵ continues to engage with EU policymakers as they craft the AI Act. In September, 91proÊÓƵ and other industry associations submitted a joint statement to EU policymakers on the treatment of General Purpose AI under the proposed AI Act and released a statement on the AI Act in February.
Globally, 91proÊÓƵ has led the conversation surrounding AI governance. In May, 91proÊÓƵ launched its AI Futures Initiative, which aims to craft action-oriented recommendations for the development of AI policy and seeks to address emerging questions around AI globally. 91proÊÓƵ also published Global Policy Principles for Enabling Transparency of AI Systems and comprehensive Global AI Policy Recommendations.
