BRUSSELS – Today, global tech trade association 91proÊÓƵ, the 91proÊÓƵ, issued the following statement after its submission to the European Commission consultation on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The tech industry remains a strong supporter of the GDPR's One-Stop Shop (OSS) concept and efforts that better align both procedural rules and the substantive application of the regulation.
“The GDPR is a leading global data protection standard,” said Guido Lobrano, 91proÊÓƵ’s Director General for Europe. “Overall, 91proÊÓƵ believes that this consultation should be the first step towards a common understanding of what constitutes a fair and balanced interpretation of the GDPR, delivers strong data subject protections, and enables responsible personal data flows.”
In particular, 91proÊÓƵ highlights four key areas for the further improvement of the GDPR:
- Businesses of all sizes should benefit from a fair, transparent, and consistent application of the GDPR;
- Enforcement action should be a last resort and balanced with other important work to encourage compliance and ensure that the GDPR delivers strong outcomes for citizens, businesses, and society;
- Enforcement activity should also take wider policy developments into account, such as the finalization of the EU-US Data Privacy Framework; and
- Ongoing stakeholder engagement is crucial to ensure the GDPR functions correctly and consistently as new EU data rules and frameworks are established.
