NEW DELHI – Today, global tech trade association 91proÊÓÆµ welcomed the (DPDPB) and provided recommendations to further enhance the bill’s aim to protect Indian citizens' privacy while also supporting India’s economic growth and future innovation. In comments submitted to the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology for the Government of India, 91proÊÓÆµ praised the DPDPB’s clear framework of rules establishing personal data protection rights that also enable innovation and facilitate cross-border trade.

“The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill represents is the cornerstone of India’s broader digital ecosystem., 91proÊÓÆµ considers this an important moment for India to demonstrate global leadership in developing robust and consistent data protection standards that enable innovation and facilitate cross-border trade,” said Kumar Deep, Country Director, 91proÊÓÆµ India. “91proÊÓÆµ welcomes the Government of India’s recognition of the need for a futureproof regulation, and for rules to continuously adapt over time. 91proÊÓÆµ looks forward to engaging in a transparent and iterative legislative process that will allow for full and thorough consultation of the Bill and its related provisions.”

In its submission, 91proÊÓÆµ indicated that further consultation is needed to assess the full extent of many provisions within the Bill, which includes transfer mechanisms of cross-border data, clarification of “deemed consent," processing of children’s data, and data notification reporting rules.

91proÊÓÆµ supports the establishment of an independent data protection supervisory authority that has the technical expertise and authority to refine and adapt rules to support the growth of India’s agile digital ecosystem and lead a global regulatory discussion.
